Continue reading the post to learn the step by step guide of metal roof painting. All the steps are mentioned below. So, let’s get started.

STEP 1- Choosing the right paint color

  1. Be familiar with the painting rules and regulations by checking out the homeowner’s association board

There are certain rules and regulations associated with some household’s association. Most homeowner’s associations impose restrictions on the colors used to paint houses. So before getting started, find out the restrictions if any.

  • Knowing the right paint for your metal roof type

There comes a variety of metal roofs that need to be painted with appropriate paints. Houses with terne metal roofs need to paint them with oil-based paint; galvanized metal roofs are usually painted with acrylic-based paint. So it is important to know your roofing type to ensure the best-painted roof for your home.

  • Choose a color that complements your house

It is best to choose a color that compliments the rest of your house. The same color for both roofing and house sometimes makes it look boring especially if you have brick or stone home. Try to choose a neutral color that perfectly complements and gives an accent to your home.

  • Purchase a primer

You can do this with the help of some professionals. Or may also find it yourself in your nearby home improvement store.

STEP 2- Take safety measures while working on the roof

  1. Consider working from an extension ladder

It is helpful to work from an extension ladder rather than climbing on the roof itself. Lean the ladder against the wall at a safer place also avoid power lines to come in contact with the ladder. For a safer idea, you can wear a protective helmet and keep your both feet firmly against the rung of the ladder and hold onto the sides with one hand if working with others.  You can use a paint roller to paint the corners of the roof instead of extending yourself to reach difficult places on the roofs.

  • Wear a harness and work with a friend to stay safe

Wear a harness while you are up on the roof or even on the ladder to avoid falling. Anchor the rope at a stable place to evade losing balance.

You can also consider a friend to help you, ask them to hold the ladder from below to avoid shaking and misbalancing.

STEP 3- Make sure to remove the old paint

  1. Scrap away old paint and remove rust patches

Use a putty knife or paint scraper to remove the old paint. Make sure to be careful in this task and not to damage the metal placed underneath. While doing this task if you find some rust patches try to scrape them out too. If not possible, then use vinegar or other solutions to remove them.

  • Wash the roof with a power washer

A power washer can help remove any areas of peeling paint you might have missed.

  • Wait at least for an hour

Before start painting your metal roof at least wait for an hour to let the whole roof dry up.

STEP 4- Apply the new paint

  1. Apply primer

Before painting apply a coat of primer on the entire roof using a paintbrush or a roller. Then let it dry for at least an hour.

  • Applying the paint

Then apply the new paint on the entire roof and avoid missing any area. Let it dry for again at least an hour. Lastly, reapply a second coat of paint all over the roof.
